February 25, 2009

North Birmingham Regional Library

Meeting was called to order at 9:10 a.m.

Announcements:

Adult Summer Reading Programs -- June 1 - August 15 coming to your library.  Check with your branch and/or dept head for programming information.  Sandi Lee stated that money is available to offer programs.  If you have any suggestions, email her or ask your supervisor for permission to attend the March 5th meeting @ 9:30 a.m. in the Board Room.

They are looking into offering weekly prizes and at the end of the SR program all names will go in the drawing for a prize.

Laptop Checkout - patrons with non AL driver's license and library card in good standing are allowed to check out the laptops.

There are three days left to complete the database quizzes.

On Order Records and Item Specific Holds

Item specific holds should not be placed

They will be cancelled when found

If a title has only the "on order record", standard procedure is to place a "Copy Returned Soonest" hold.

Graphic Novels can now be shelved separately, see Mary Stewart's email (1/29/09) about the new guidelines, definition and classifications.

The list is out once a month (same time as paperback list). Submit suggestions for Adult titles to Michael Sherer or Jared Millet; Juvenile titles to Vincent Solfronk or Barbara Hutto and Teen titles to Maya Jones.

In Mary Stewart's absence, Elizabeth Swift gave a demonstration of an extra step needed in Event Keeper.  This will help Mary to add BPL programs to the JCLC Event Keeper calendar.

Elizabeth gave a sneak preview of the Kidsonline Catalog that will be available for the public, March 13th.  It was designed by Children's Librarian in BPL & JC.  If there are any questions or suggestions, relay them to your children's librarian for your region.

Cyberteen Website was demonstrated by Melinda Shelton.  It is available for public use.  Gloster was used to create the front page and Del.icio.us is a website where staff can go in and tag a website without contacting Melinda.  If there are any questions or suggestions, contact Rochelle Sides-Renda, Committee chair.

L2 Krewe presents:

Virtual Tours: Hunter Murphy and Michael Fagin gave an inside look at BPL.  Look for them to come to your location soon!

Videos: Richard Manosky and Robert Jones are looking for more actors and actress to capture library programs.

Twitter: Kathy Brewis and Melinda Shelton showed this special networking tool in real time.  Take a look at twitter.com and if you would like to contribute, please join!

Blogs: Tressa Barnes and Leslie Deason invited everyone to checkout Teen Blog and BPL Blog on the intranet.  They both demonstrated these sites and would like to extend an open invitation for others to add to either or both blogs. If you are interested sign up and an invitation will be sent.

Meeting adjourned.
