Paraprofessional Meeting
May 23, 2007
North Birmingham Public Library
Meeting was called to order at 9:05 a.m.
Debbie Dahlin made two announcements: there will be no meeting in June and the next meeting will be in July. July’s meeting place will be announced later. She reminded everyone that the Paraprofessional meetings are always the fourth Wednesday in the month unless otherwise informed. It is also on the Acquisition’s monthly calendar that is located on the BPL intranet.
Debbie Dahlin demonstrated how to ‘freeze’ a hold on WebCat. If their materials are ‘in transit’ it will not allow them to freeze their item(s). She asked staff to remind patrons to unfreeze their holds when they are ready to receive their materials.
Le@d Online Training presentations:
Venedia Wallace gave the definition of database. She also talked about the types of databases and gave examples of each one.
Monica Cottrell talked about the Database Evaluation Guide and how to implement it when conducting reference interviews.
Donna Medicis expressed the necessity of asking reference interview questions when helping patrons.
Barbara Clotfelter, head of Business, Science and Technology did an awesome overview of how BPL Databases are useful to us and our patrons. Her presentation included a demonstration and handouts of SIRS Knowledge Source and Lit Finder. Barbara also reminded staff that if your location need help finding information; feel free to call any Central department for assistance. Sometimes the information can be e-mail to your location or directly to the patron.
