Meeting was called to order at 9:10 a.m.
 
Deidre Sims made an announcement for Linda Wilson that fresh produce (cucumbers,
squash, and tomatoes)were available for sale in the Public Relations Department.
 
Le@d Online Training presentations:
 
Michael Fagin presented a power point presentation on the subject, Retailing
Methods & Techniques in Libraries. This presentation can be found on the
intranet.
 
Lisa Ayers presented handouts on Saturate Your Knowledge, Not Your Fat Intake. 
Her handouts included information on Cholesterol, Trans Fat, Saturated Fat,
Recipe and Meal planning resources, Resources on Reducing Fat Intake for your
Patrons, Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, Cancer, and Diabetes. She spoke on
each of these topics and gave additional information.

Ann Austin – Reaching Reluctant Readers
 
Nancy Cleckler demonstrated how to delete multiple items from a list using
Millennium. She also had a handout with step by step instructions.
 
The next dog and pony show presenter was Jane Keeton. Jane explained how the
budget will affect standing orders paperbacks and juvenile authors.   Standing
orders paperbacks will be on the paperback list. Nonfiction paperbacks are only
on the Pop List.
 
 The standing order juvenile authors will be on a list.
 The test books i.e., Police, Fire, ACT, SAT, etc has been eliminated from the
adult standing orders.
 
She reminded branches that misc. orders can be sent in anytime. If you don’t
have a budget for a certain area you can’t order (i.e. juvenile) neighborhoods
don’t have a budget for this area. 
 
Debbie announced, “Big Read project, To Kill a Mockingbird, DVDs paperbacks, and
hardback copies are being ordered for every location. They should be arriving at
your location in the next few weeks”.
 
Jane demonstrated how to view order records, go to search holds→ enter record
number. Make sure a space is between your code and the last one that was
entered ( ssaci, tiavi, )
Item records are created as soon as an item is received in Acquisition
Department. 
Books that show holds on them are rushed through to Catalog Department for
processing.
Please encourage your patrons to place holds on books and not wait until staff
put them in their hands or place holds for them.
 
Jane made available an Acquisitions Contact List for each library to pick up
after the meeting.
 
Mary Stewart – Catalog Assignments by Library/Department/Format handout
available for pick up after the meeting.
 
Mary also reminded everyone that the Catalog Department creates bib records for
the entire county.  Other statistics given were that they produce over 3,000 bib
records each month.
 
When sending in Form I or Ia for changes --- remember that everybody has to 
have the same information. Your requested may need to be evaluated. 
 
Form A – gifts for nonfiction items maybe evaluated. Older materials will not be
added to the system. If there is no bib record on the system, send the item to
Catalog Department. Don’t forget to send the library and contact name that the
material is being cataloged.
 
ISBN numbers has been changed from 10 digits to 13 digits. Most ISBN can be
scanned with the newer barcode readers.
 
Playaways -- Itype will be changed so they can be reserved. The new Itype will
be 42. Playaway cases are changing so they won’t be hard to open.
 
DVDs—will order scripted DVDs for the sight impaired. It will have a symbol on
the case (yellow sticker with sound waves).
 
When filling DVD holds, please check the DVD to see if it is viewable
(scratched, need cleaning, cracked…). If it is not viewable, move the hold to
another location so that it can be filled. Remember to check your item out to
missing.
 
Branch and Department Heads receive an In Process List, if you see a call# on
the list that means it has been delivered.
 
If it doesn’t have a call # send an e-mail to Caleb West @ cwest@bham.lib.al.us.
 
Searching for juvenile materials in the Subject field can not be accessed but
will be evaluated later.
 
Everyone was reminded to sign the sign in sheet and to pick up handouts before
adjourning.
