She gave the origin and history of the copyright law which was signed by George Washington on May 31, 1790.
Leslie begin by asking what is the definition of copyright? It is a form of protection provided by the laws of the United States to the authors of "original works of authorship" including literary, dramatic, musical...
Six basics rights of creator of work:
- right of reproduction of copies or "phone records"
- right of adaptation or creation of derivative works
- distribution of copies or phone records by sale, gift, rental, lease or lending
- public performance of the work for literary, musical, dramatic works and dance, plus motion pictures and other audiovisual works
- public display of the work
- digital transmission of sound recording, such as from websites
Leslie gave scenarios (see pbwiki link) of each of these rights.
She conclued with these thoughts:
Copyright is a complex subject.
- Learn about copyright through the Copyright Advisory Network
- Develop a copyright policy and train staff
- Learn more about copyright through books and internet resources.
- Do not copy from books, pictures or the internet for patrons. Continue to show patrons how to use the copier and internet but do not make the copies for them.
The final presentor was Robert Jones. He demonstrated how pbwiki will work. If you are making a presentation with handouts, he asked that they are e-mailed to him at rjones@bham.lib.al.us . The L2 crew will meet this afternoon to come up with names of staff who will be editing this site. Debbie asked Robert to add the Catalog to the side bar. If you have any brainstorming ideas send them to Robert. Only positive inputs will be considered.
The staff who will be setting up pbwiki are: Kathy Brewis, Melinda Shelton, Richard Manoske, Tressa Fancher and Robert Jones. Deidre Sims will be adding the monthly minutes.
Next meeting will be February 27, 2008.
